FAQ

Questions, answered

How much could I be owed?

It depends entirely on your job, expenses and how many years you claim — some people are owed very little, others several hundred pounds or more. We assess yours for free before you commit.

How much does WiseReturn charge?

Our fee is 15% of your refund, with a minimum of £30 — whichever is higher. A £150 refund = £30 fee. A £300 refund = £45 fee. No upfront costs, ever. HMRC pays your refund directly to you, in full — we invoice our fee afterwards, due within 14 days. No win, no fee means we don't charge you if HMRC doesn't pay a refund. It's worth knowing that HMRC can review a refund after it has been paid, and can ask for money back if a claim turns out not to have been valid. That's why we only submit claims we can evidence. You can claim a tax refund directly from HMRC yourself, for free, at gov.uk. We charge a fee because we do the work for you: we check what you can claim, prepare the evidence, and deal with HMRC on your behalf. If you'd rather do it yourself, that's a legitimate choice and we'd rather you knew.

How do your fees compare to other services?

Leading providers such as RIFT charge up to 36% of your refund including VAT, with a minimum fee of £60 (inc. VAT). WiseReturn charges 15% with a £30 minimum — less than half. On a £1,000 refund that can be up to £210 more in your pocket. Based on RIFT's published PAYE rate, checked 10 July 2026. WiseReturn is not VAT registered.

Is there a minimum claim?

We don't take on claims worth less than £75 — after our minimum fee there wouldn't be enough left to be worth it for you. If yours is under that, we'll tell you, and tell you when to come back. See when it's worth claiming.

How long does a claim take?

Once submitted, HMRC typically processes claims within 8–12 weeks. We send regular updates (typically weekly) and notify you the moment your refund is confirmed.

What years can I claim for?

Currently 2025/26, 2024/25, 2023/24 and 2022/23. Claims for 2022/23 must be submitted before 5 April 2027.

Who can make a claim?

Anyone employed who has paid work-related expenses out of their own pocket — military personnel, NHS workers, tradespeople, delivery drivers, teachers and more. If unsure, submit a claim and we'll assess it free.

Will this affect my tax code?

In most cases no. Sometimes HMRC adjusts your tax code to reflect ongoing allowances, which means you pay less tax going forward. We'll explain clearly if this applies to you.

What if HMRC rejects my claim?

You pay nothing — no win, no fee means we don't charge you if HMRC doesn't pay a refund. We'll always tell you honestly whether your claim is strong before we submit it. And because HMRC can review a refund even after it has been paid, we only submit claims we can evidence.

How does the referral scheme work?

£10 for you and £10 for your friend on each successful referral, where our fee is more than £30. No cap on how many people you refer. Once your claim completes you'll receive a unique referral code; content creators can apply for a creator code via our Work With Us page — it works identically.

Is my personal information safe?

Yes. We are completing our ICO registration under UK GDPR. We handle all data in line with UK GDPR. Your NI number and financial details are stored securely and only shared with HMRC to process your claim.

Do I need to do anything after submitting?

Very little. We'll send a 64-8 form to sign and return, then handle everything else and update you regularly. HMRC pays your refund directly to you; once it arrives we'll send our fee invoice on 14-day terms.
