FAQ
Questions, answered
How much could I be owed?
The average UK tax refund is around £300, though this varies by job, expenses and years claimed. Military personnel, healthcare workers and tradespeople often receive more. Submit a claim and we'll assess exactly what you're owed — for free.
How much does WiseReturn charge?
Our fee is 15% of your refund, with a minimum of £30 — whichever is higher. A £150 refund = £30 fee. A £300 refund = £45 fee. No refund, no fee. No upfront costs, ever.
How do your fees compare to other services?
Leading providers such as RIFT charge up to 36% of your refund with a minimum fee of £60. WiseReturn charges 15% with a £30 minimum — less than half. On a £1,000 refund that's £210 more in your pocket. Comparison correct as of June 2026; RIFT's 36% includes VAT; WiseReturn is not VAT registered.
How long does a claim take?
Once submitted, HMRC typically processes claims within 8–12 weeks. We send weekly updates every Tuesday and notify you the moment your refund is confirmed.
What years can I claim for?
Currently 2025/26, 2024/25, 2023/24 and 2022/23. Claims for 2022/23 must be submitted before 5 April 2027.
Who can make a claim?
Anyone employed or self-employed who has paid work-related expenses out of their own pocket — military personnel, NHS workers, tradespeople, delivery drivers, teachers and more. If unsure, submit a claim and we'll assess it free.
Will this affect my tax code?
In most cases no. Sometimes HMRC adjusts your tax code to reflect ongoing allowances, which means you pay less tax going forward. We'll explain clearly if this applies to you.
What if HMRC rejects my claim?
You pay nothing. We're completely no win, no fee, and we'll always tell you honestly whether your claim is strong before we submit it.
How does the referral scheme work?
Once your claim completes you'll receive a unique referral code. When anyone completes their first claim with it, you both receive £10 paid to your bank accounts. No limit. Content creators can apply for a creator code via our Work With Us page — it works identically.
Is my personal information safe?
Yes. We're registered with the ICO and handle all data in line with UK GDPR. Your NI number and financial details are stored securely and only shared with HMRC to process your claim.
Do I need to do anything after submitting?
Very little. We'll send a 64-8 form to sign and return, then handle everything else, update you weekly, and contact you to arrange payment once your refund is confirmed.
